Most Post-Surgery Rehab Leaves You Short

You survived the surgery. You showed up to appointments. So why are you still in pain — and why does your body feel weaker than before you went under the knife?

Traditional PT clinics are built around volume, not outcomes. When your recovery is managed by a rotating cast of aides running you through generic protocols, the result is predictable: a discharge that feels more like abandonment than a finish line.

Assembly-Line Appointments

You get 15 minutes with a tech and a sheet of exercises you could've Googled yourself. No one is actually watching your movement, loading your tissue, or progressing your plan.

Cleared to Return — But Not Ready

Insurance says you're done. Your surgeon says you're cleared. But your knee buckles on stairs, your shoulder aches overhead, and something still feels off. 'Good enough' isn't good enough.

Back to Baseline Isn't the Goal

Generic rehab aims to get you back to where you were before surgery. But what if that baseline was already part of the problem? You deserve to come back stronger — not just functional.

"I would give 20 stars if I could! I started seeing Dr. Roe in July for a large herniated L5S1 disc that just was not getting better. I did 16 weeks of traditional PT. I really did not want surgery or an epidural and I had heard great things about BUILT so I reached out to them. I will forever be grateful to Dr. Roe. I have had 11 sessions and am so much stronger. I have my life back!"

"Beyond impressed. I came to Dr. Roe with ongoing back pain (about 4 months), thinking it was something I'd just have to live with. With her guidance, I'm now completely pain-free. She gave clear, easy-to-follow instructions and exercises for rehab, and they made all the difference. I went from side-stepping down the stairs to practically skipping down them!"

"As a middle-aged guy always chasing athletic goals, any injury could mean time away from the activities that bring meaning to my life. I've been working with Natalie for 3 months with the goal of bulletproofing my body. The change has been drastic, particularly in my feet, glutes, and mid/upper back. Anybody willing to put the work in will benefit greatly from her expertise."

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything you need to know before booking your first session at BUILT Physical Therapy & Performance in Valparaiso, IN.

Do I need a physician referral to start post-surgery physical therapy at BUILT?

No. Indiana is a direct access state, which means you can begin physical therapy without a referral from your surgeon or primary care provider. Just call or book online and we'll get you started.

What does a typical post-surgery PT session at BUILT look like?

Every session is 60 minutes, one-on-one with Dr. Natalie Roe — no aides, no techs, no double-booking. Your session may include manual therapy, dry needling, targeted strength work on real gym equipment, and a personalized home exercise program. Every plan is built around your specific surgery, your body, and your goals.

Does BUILT accept insurance for post-surgery rehab?

BUILT operates on a self-pay model. This means your care is driven entirely by your goals and your recovery timeline — not an insurance company's visit limit or protocol. Many patients find that the depth and quality of one-on-one care far outweighs the cost difference.

How soon after surgery can I start physical therapy?

The right start time depends on your surgery type, your surgeon's clearance, and your current mobility. We encourage you to schedule your free 15-minute consultation as early as possible — even before clearance — so we can plan your recovery from day one.

What surgeries do you commonly treat in post-surgery rehab?

We regularly work with patients recovering from ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, meniscus surgery, hip labral repair, lumbar procedures, shoulder stabilization, and Achilles tendon repair — among others. If you're not sure whether your surgery is a fit, just ask during your free consult.
